BBSRC Animal Welfare Initiative - Bristol/Oxford/RVC

Programme 2

This programme investigates the effects of early experience on an animal's subsequent ability to deal with potential welfare challenges later in life. Two projects use different examples to address this issue.

Project 2.1. Young sheep on farms may be subjected to husbandry procedures such as tail-docking and castration early in life. This project investigates how the early experience of these events influences the animal's ability to cope with subsequent husbandry procedures, both in the short and long-term.

Project 2.2. Broiler chickens often suffer from leg problems as they grow older. This project investigates how early experience of housing factors such as temperature and lighting, even at the egg stage, might help to decrease the animal's susceptibility to musculoskeletal problems later in life.
